Dear Diary,
Wow, that was really strange. I got a call from Edward Van Groote and he wanted me to meet with him. First of all, that is kind of weird on it's own. I mean... I gave Vivian my phone number and I know she works for him. She's neat. David Deveau's sister. David is a confusing person. Seems nice enough. Might be a good person to have as a friend, but runs totally luke warm and cold. Maybe he does not like me. Ah well. Haven't given him reason to like me, really. But, that is a tale for another telling and I am rambling. Hush, Diary. I know I ramble. It's your job to help me stay focused and you are failing. So there.
Okay. Back to this interview with Edward. He kept pressing to send a cab or a car or come over. Yeah, I know. Only after I refused to go to his house. But, I didn't want him to know where I live. Why? I don't know. His calling like that made me nervous. I mean... I am a student and he's this hotshot business man. Maybe I am being paranoid, but that can keep you alive. Anyway... He wanted to know why his associate, Lily freaked out at the park. And she really did freak out. Scared me to death and I fear I ran. Well. Left quickly. You don't run in this city. Not in fear, anyway. People chase you and you can die.
So, I get to his house and what a house! Beautiful in a quietly tasteful way. Other than the gargoyles. Nothing quiet about them. I wonder if they have cameras in their eyes to record everyone who approaches the building. Or, perhaps they are some kind of demonic servant. *shudder* Gah. Good thing I won't be paying his house a nefarious visit in the near future. Best avoid the place across the street as well. Too bad, though. Some of his stuff would feed me for a month or more.
On to the man himself. I am not entirely sure what to think of Edward Van Groote. He's dreadfully sincere. Terribly focused. Does not laugh much, but can be convinced to smile. He's that dangerous sort of vampire that you really really want to like you but is inscrutable. Not a very satisfying friend to have as you may never know his true feelings for you. Frustrating. I think I did fairly well, though I did make a couple of mistakes. Maybe he did not notice. Yeah, right. He's the sort to notice everything and remember it for the rest of his unnatural life. I hate talking to vampires. They always seem to know when you have something to hide. Still, I did stick to the literal truth, so that's alright. He seemed put off by my laughing, though. Either he knows I'm hiding something, or thinks I have a whacked sense of humor. Which I do. Maybe I can come up with something to underscore that opinion...
The strangest part was when he offered me a job. I am sure he did not mean it this way, but there was the implication that the job could involve corporate espionage. What a thought. I could do it, too. Sneaking into offices is easier in a lot of ways than sneaking into houses. People are less careful about office security than home security. Er. Unless they have something to hide, of course. Still, the kinds of security systems people install at the office are fairly standard. Even if they have something to hide. And the payoff is much higher. Though I get the feeling that, if I started stealing for Mr. Van Groote, I would not be able to chose my own assignments or how many I perform in a month. That increases the danger factor exponentially. I just don't know. I guess I'll start looking into office security systems. Might even accept the offer of a summer internship. That would mean I could leave off for a while. Two jobs so close together is a little much, but a girl's gotta eat.
I'm going to call the fam from a pay phone. See if Melloy still lives in the old place. Let mom and dad know that I'm alive. Though I don't really think this is a good idea, it's been eight years.
